MMH Article Describes Role of Warehouse Execution Systems in “Software Drives Automated Packaging Efficiencies”

CINCINNATI, OH — Roberto Michel, senior editor for Modern Materials Handling, has interviewed Matthews Automation Solutions’ Dann Woellert for their October 2020 issue, “Software Drives Automated Packaging Efficiencies”.

This article focuses on high tech automation and software being implemented by distribution centers in their packaging operations in order to keep up with the growing demand of e-commerce order fulfillment. Automated packaging is considered a growing area because of the labor it can save, versus trying to manually pack small orders.

Dann Woellert is Matthews Automation’s software product manager with expertise in Warehouse Execution Systems (WES) and Warehouse Control Systems (WCS). For many years, Dann has been involved in plant automation as a Process Controls Engineer and Product Manager.

Here’s a short summary of the improvements for overall facility flow and packaging that WES can provide, as shared in the article:

  • For omni-channel fulfillment the industry’s focus is now on automated packaging, with its labor-saving aspects. WES is a complementary, holistic management technology which benefits the overall facility flow, including packaging operations.
  • WES keeps the flow of the warehouse in balance and can preemptively address the rightsizing of packages to benefit pack out automation.
  • WES can pull in information from all automated systems, including packing system elements. Therefore, WES can help keep automated pack out stations in sync with other zones of automation, like put walls and conveyors, that are feeding completed orders to pack out.
  • After pulling the data into WES, whether it is from conveyors/sortation, or from a put wall system, the software can make forward-looking decisions to control the overall flow of the operation and ensure the entire DC is running efficiently and smoothly.
