Put wall applications are experiencing an explosion of new technologies
Modern Material Handling’s “Put walls help drive innovation in the warehouse” article in their July 2023 issue reports on how put walls are keeping pace with the rapid advancements in automation and robotics to help companies fill orders faster and more efficiently.
Why is Put Wall Usage Increasing?
The MMH article explains that the uptick in ecommerce orders has been driving the use of put walls for sorting and consolidating items that are going to the same customer. Put walls are highly configurable and reduce order fulfillment errors.
In addition, as more organizations are investing in goods-to-person (GTP) technology, like automated storage and retrieval systems (AS/RS) and mini-shuttles, sortation is happening towards the end of the process (prior to shipping) utilizing put walls.
The Future of Put Walls
Peter Gerbitz, systems sales manager at Matthews Automation | Lightning Pick, was interviewed for the article. He sees more integration between robotics, automation and put walls on the near horizon.
"Put walls can still function as stand-alone solutions with traditional batch picking and sorting the batches into individual orders, but they’re also working more and more in conjunction with other solutions."
